May 29th is National Composting Day! Here are some fun kid composting and kid soil activities!
1. Read "The Soil in Jackie's Garden" a perfect soil/composting story!
2. Create Compost in a bottle. This worksheet gives instructions!
3. Do a soil separation experiment. All of the activities in this guide are good, but the soil separation experiment is on page 5.
4. Watch some fun soil videos. This one is about where soil comes from and this one is about all the critters that live in the soil!
5. Learn how to take a soil sample.
6. Soil your undies! This is when you bury a pair of 100% cotton underwear and leave it in the soil, then dig it up after a few months to see what happens. Get a full lesson from IL Ag in the Classroom.
7. Candy Core Sampling - use chocolate candy to take "soil samples." Another lesson from IL AITC.
8. Make a dirt cup - celebrate with a delicious treat and discuss all the critters that live in soil! We found a kid-friendly dirt cup recipe here.
