Farm Boots is about boots, right? Well, Farm Boots certainly features a ton of boots, but that's not only what's on the page. Farm Boots also features seasons, chores on the farm, adorable farm animals, a metaphor about growing up— but that isn’t all either. Farm Boots features rural life.
About one in five Americans live in rural areas, that’s a good bit of people, and there aren’t a lot of modern/present-day picture books set in rural areas.
It is wonderful for readers to be able to see their own lives reflected back at them in books. It is also a great way to show a window into the world of rural living if you don’t get to experience it daily – and sometimes that is what reading is all about – being able to imagine or experience someone else’s life. It is a way to expand your understanding of the world, even if it is subtle.
What other worlds and experiences are we missing out on? Surely the answer can be found in books.
