What does a good farm book look like? Honestly, it is almost easier to tell you what it isn’t instead of what it is! A good farm book isn’t about Agriculture with a capital A. Instead, we look for books with stories that feature food, farming, gardening, or rural life.
Good farm books for kids tell a story— Like Tales of the Dairy Godmother: Chuck’s Ice Cream Wish, where a boy makes a wish for all the ice cream he could ever eat and gets granted a dairy farm!
Or I Love Strawberries, a great garden book for grades 5-8 about Jolie and her trusty rabbit Munchy as they set out with determination to grow their own berries.
These stories engage the reader (and the listener) while answering, “where does my food come from?”
Good farm books show what farms actually look like.
Pigs in mud, old fashion ‘milk cans,’ antique tractors, and hand-milking photos aren’t good examples of modern farming.
Modern technology can make farm books exciting for kids! Drones, tractors with GPS technology and automatic irrigation systems are featured in books like Lisl H. Detlefsen’s picture book Right This Very Minute: a table to farm book about food and farming. Farm Boots, also by Lisl and art by Renee Kurilla, is another farm book that showcases many modern farms of all sizes.
Farm books for kids also showcase rural life. They can be a window into the life of a kid who lives on a farm – an experience that may seem completely different from their own day-to-day life.
My Family’s Corn Farm, My Family’s Soybean Farm and Barn at Night are books about rural living and country life. They show what life on a farm is like!
At the end of the day, taking all things into consideration, the goal of finding a good farm book means a book that kids are going to love! Bonus if a teacher can use it in a classroom to go with a lesson (we can help with that too all Feeding Minds Press books have lessons and activities!)
We hope you enjoy our books about food, farms, and gardening!
